Ken Ann Building, Ft. Lauderdale 2012

Absolutely my very favorite architecture in the state is located on the corner of US 1 and Oakland Park Boulevard in Ft. Lauderdale. The whimsical office building is known as the Ken Ann building, and when I was young I was sure the cartoon characters from The Jetsons lived there. Funny that I grew up to learn that architect Louis F. Wolff designed the building in 1964 with that cartoon in mind. The 8-story structure was built for Ken Burnstine (his wife’s name was Ann). Ken was an infamous drug smuggler and pilot who allegedly died in a Mojave Desert Air Show. Yes, there’s a story there, but his building is beyond fabulous. The first time I ever saw the art of Charlie Harper, all I could think about was this building’s geometric mural.
