“Cool Character,” Tampa Bay, 2012

This regal character was working the bay one hot afternoon. While watching his stealthful fishing I remembered a game warden’s tales of working with scientists to tag Great Blue Herons decades ago. He said he’d rather wrestle a small alligator than the full force of their long muscular neck and its deadly razor blade of a beak at the end of it. I like that they look like such “cool characters”—all svelte and lithe—but they can still hold their own with creatures much bigger than they are.
