“Hay Rolls,” Leon County, 2011

Grass hay, put up in large rolls like this, looks so old fashioned to me. I do not know why, because modern livestock still requires additional forage—especially in North Florida for the winter season. Still, whenever I drive by a pasture storing its hay outside like this, I think there should be ladies around it in dresses and colorful kerchiefs on their heads raking it or something. This pasture along Centerville Road north of Tallahassee is always majestic but especially so with the late afternoon shadows. And, there’s nothing like the smell of fresh cut hay drying out the in autumn air.
