“Winter Water Forest,” Ochopee 2007

Shabby chic cypress trees, colorful bromeliads, and perky wildflowers adorn the waters of the Fakahatchee Strand in Big Cypress National Preserve. The “strand” is something of a slough in the western Everglades and to see it firsthand, the National Park Service hosts guided “Swamp Tromps” through this tropical wilderness — as does artist Clyde Butcher from his gallery in Ochopee. Like the donkey trips down into the Grand Canyon, slogging through the primeval muck under that remarkable canopy can be life changing. It’s an unforgettable feeling wading into the swamp and seeing and feeling it in all its glory first hand. Put it on your “bucket list.” Trust me.
