“Winter Cypress,” Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, 2008

As my colleague filmmaker Joe Davenport says, “The Everglades really are just a riot of geometry, when you go out there.” Exactly! I’ve been thinking that for years and did not have the words because the shapes in my beloved landscape so beguile me. On this winter day, the cypress trees in their chilly grays and silvers stood firmly against the sky’s bluing whites. They struck me as a natural tessellation — a thought my high school geometry teacher would be proud of.
