“Naked Ed Ahead,” High Springs, 2012

For 26 years Naked Ed has lived at Lily Spring on the Santa Fe River south of the Town of High Springs. He’s a local boy from Lake City with a bone disease that provides disability checks. My favorite canoe outfitter in the state, Jim Wood, tells his guests that Naked Ed is a harmless hermit who lives in a grass hut and is the caretaker of the private property that the owners (by way of Naked Ed) allow river guests to experience. It is prudent to share this assessment, because Naked Ed isn’t interested in talking to all kinds of people — and you never know who he’s going to see through. Despite his local roots, he doesn’t like rednecks and anyone loud and/or trashy looking. That said, the staff of two governors thought it was wise for the head of state to meet with the naked man during “field visits.” In the buff he’s also talked to other people on the river, like the scientists from both the Suwannee River Water Management District and the University of Florida, who have met him through their work and who recognized the obvious relevance of sharing and interviewing him about their data findings.
