“Cracker Cocktails,” Orlando, 2006

These are kumquats at the Leu Gardens in downtown Orlando, but I grew up with the trees all over south Florida. I personally am a Calamondin girl—which are rounder versions of a similarly tiny, tangy orange that is quite tart. I read somewhere that both fruits are like oranges in reverse—with lip-puckering sour-sour insides but sweet, delectable skins outside. My grandmother would make marmalades out of both Kumquats and Calamondins that tasted like sweet tart candies spread over our biscuits. But the best kept secret about them is their divinity when added to the evening’s libations. Think vodka or bourbon with the citrus “fresh-squeezed” into the drink and dropped in there to soak. Yes, there are “Cracker Foodies,” and if you trust me on this you’ll never go back to lame ole lemons and limes. Oh and ask me about my Calamondin Cosmos! Oh my goodness they’re good…
