Shark Valley, Everglades National Park, 2008

When the hurricanes of 2005 destroyed so many of the structures in Everglades National Park, it seemed like everybody wanted to “reboot” the architecture originally chosen for the national resource. Plans are underway to resurrect the old Flamingo Lodge and visitor center the hurricane destroyed. I’m not completely supportive of the new designs people are discussing. I feel like a traitor to my class in the environmental community — meekly admitting that I liked the park’s mid-century modern motif. It’s America’s Everglades for goodness sake and America obtained it in 1947. Floridians — and their “Cracker” architecture — would have killed the sucker long ago if the Feds hadn’t intervened. I know this to be true. And so to me that “old” modernesque architecture feels powerful. I’m glad the government came down and made us do what was right and put something of a worldly stamp on the place.
