“Live Oak Plantation,” Tallahassee 2011

I love the way the light on Live Oak Plantation Road changes with the seasons and so far I have two different paintings of this treasured corridor in north Tallahassee. Its majesty has a calming effect on me–despite the fact that this once sleepy corner of the city has evolved into a busy thoroughfare with more traffic than the residents would like. In January 2015, there was also a fuss from the residents in the stately and tony neighborhood about the city’s plans to put in sidewalks. As you can imagine, the road’s enchanting vistas attract more runners and walkers than they probably want in their neighborhood, but they were also concerned about protecting the very trees and canopy people want to appreciate. I trust that the city is capable of weaving the sidewalks among the trees and agree that we need to make the road safer for everyone on it, but I am already beginning to mourn the genteel look of the neighborhood’s rural character.
