“Live Oak Plantation Road,” Tallahassee 2011

Without a doubt, the prettiest street in Florida’s capitol city is Live Oak Plantation Road, which parallels I-10 in the northern section of town. The road is only about a mile long and what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. Named for the Live Oak Plantation where the original house still remains, the canopied road is both majestic and soothing. The cotton plantation was originally established in 1832 by John Branch, the sixth and last territorial governor of Florida. In 1948, Live Oak Plantation was sold to A. M. Middlebrooks and most of its acreage became the lovely old neighborhoods in and around Live Oak Plantation Road and including Middlebrooks Circle. The light on Live Oak Plantation Road changes with the seasons, and so far I have two different paintings of this treasured corridor.
