“Lake Miccosukee Fish Camp,” Leon County 2007

This house is located behind Reeves Fish Camp on Lake Miccosukee which forms the northern border between Jefferson and Leon Counties. Miccosukee, like many of the region’s lakes, is a shallow “Prairie lake” that tends to empty naturally during dry periods. During the dry spells, a variety of land plants flourish in the rich nutrients of the lake bed and landowners were known to graze their livestock in the lake’s prairie. The 6,312-acres lake is controlled by an active sink hole that reaches into the Floridan Aquifer. Fishing the lake is always an option, but it’s known for providing some of the finest duck hunting in north Florida. And while you’re there, look for the incredibly rare Miccosukee gooseberry (Ribes echinellum). The endangered plant species only exists in three places in the world—here on Lake Miccosukee and in two locations in South Carolina.
