“Hungry Bend,” Cedar Key 2007

When I was an adolescent in the 1980s, I daydreamed about living in Hungry Bend and fixing it up—something akin to children’s stories where adolescents like the Boxcar Children would live and make nice. I loved this old Cedar Key House and its location back and away from the more civilized parts of the island. Then, I got sophisticated and lost interest in the ramshackle residence only to rediscover it around the turn of the century. At that point, I was forced to realize that we are both aging eclectically. Now the house serves as one of my favorite places to visit. I love to go by on every visit to the island to make sure it’s still there—that it’s still funky, weird, and cluttered.
