“Holiday Park,” Broward County 2012

Broward County’s gateway to the eastern Everglades is Holiday Park. For years it has been operated by a concessionaire that offers touristy airboat rides while operating a depressing little store. Although the county is planning on taking it over in a few years, the regulars complain that government will sanitize the quirky outpost in favor of environmental education and more mainstream tastes. The eastern Everglades have so much to offer in terms of outdoor recreation opportunities, I think the county’s plans are probably a good idea. It’s a little crude out there now – and it’s not really the kind of native tacky that features a funny story. But who knows, there may come a time when I’ll miss the bygone days of the tawdry little park.
