Despite its densely populated urban areas, 66 percent of Broward County is Everglades. The county’s urban boundary is determined by a levy that defines Water Conservation Areas 2 and 3. The conservation areas are cordoned off with water control levees and canals and sustain signature Everglades marshes interspersed with tree islands. If you follow Griffin Road west from US 1 in Ft. Lauderdale until it ends you’ll find Everglades Holiday Park. At the park, you can experience a cheesy airboat ride and meet some of the seediest characters South Florida has to offer—all mingled in with bass fishermen, hunters, froggers, cyclists and, school children. In the distance is what my family calls a “flower bird tree,” which is a tree white cattle egrets choose to return to every evening at twilight.
