I love to visit Corkscrew Swamp, because it is “my favorite art museum in the state.” Outdoor enthusiast snobs sometimes scoff at the handicapped accessible boardwalk and bemoan all the people chatting with docents. But I don’t go there looking for a wilderness experience as much as an opportunity to cast my eyes on “the best of the best” —and to thank God everyone has the chance to see it in all its glory. In that kind of setting I like having other visitors and docents share in my experience! It’s all relative, because I do believe that “Nature is the Art of God,” and I have to believe this Sanctuary is one of Mother Nature’s Louvres. Laugh if you like, but this swamp truly displays “Florida’s Mona Lisa.” It is within the only basin of the entire 16-county Everglades ecosystem that has not been manipulated and engineered by man, and it sustains the oldest cypress tree stand on the continent.
