The majestic trees in Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park in Tallahassee are all old friends of mine. Sometimes this friendship reminds me of artist Wendell Barry. He has tree friends too. I’m as sure of that as I am the truth in one of his poems that is a particular favorite of mine: “I part the out thrusting branches, and come in beneath, the blessed and the blessing trees. Though I am silent there is singing around me. Though I am dark there is vision around me. Though I am heavy there is flight around me.”
