“Happy to be Alive. Again.” Live Oak, 2012

My cousin’s Palomino had a dreadful run of bad luck after a stable accident where she was boarded in Palm Beach County. It was touch and go for years, but the quarter horse finally seems to be truly recovering after retiring to North Florida where she now lives with her aunt and her brothers. How many horses get to say that? My cousin lives in South Florida, but she tries to visit her as often as possible. I went with her on her last visit, and it was a great day. Of course I always enjoy my cousin, but I was also grateful to see her beloved mare living it up on a loving little farm tucked in between Timberlands and the Suwannee River. After the visit I kept having dreams of “Prissy” running in the moonlight. She wasn’t running away from anything, just running and snorting and dancing in the moon shadows. Despite all the white moonlight, the Palomino still looked like shiny cream — all golden in my dreams. I think it means she’s finally happy to be alive. Again.
