“Tree Island Camp,” Water Conservation Area 2, 2008

Everglades tree islands can be found in the remaining portions of the River of Grass where the ridge and slough ecosystem dominates — today this is in Water Conservation Areas 1, 2 and 3 and in central portions of Everglades National Park. Some of these tree islands have hunting and fishing camps on them. When the Central and Southern Flood Control Project was implemented by the federal government after the devastating hurricane of 1947, the camps were grandfathered in through leases with the South Florida Water Management District. These camps — which are only accessible by airboats or swamp buggies — have been used for well over 50 years, and the leases are passed down through families. I know of 39 of these camps, but there’s probably close to 50 of them out there. Some are on tree islands, canal levees and other areas with high ground. The state is allowing these folks to stay until 2020 when the leases will be reviewed again. Some of the camps are very up to date and quaint, while others are very rough and not so accommodating — like this one at Lost Lake in Broward County.
