“Tomato Plants, You Pull,” High Springs

I believe the need to grow tomatoes is a genetic trait most evident in southerners. But, it does exist in other kindred spirits, and I’m always happy to see the tradition growing beyond my cultural boundaries. Long before it was popular to have an organic vegetable garden in your backyard, the southerners who colored me always seemed to have a patch of them growing somewhere—whether it was beside their shop out back, in pots beside the kitchen backdoor, or on the balconies of student housing at Harvard. For them, it’s a compulsion, a primal need. But I see it in other cultures too. When I think of Marlon Brando, the first visual that pops into my head is not Stanley yelling “Stella,” or his face bashed in “On the Water Front.” No, the Marlon I am forever connected to is sitting with his tomato plants in The God Father.
