“Stormy Spring,” Ft. White 2012

The legend of the Dogwood tree holds that the tree’s wood was used to make the cross that crucified Christ. There’s even a well-traveled Anonymous poem that reveals: “Slender and twisted it shall always be, With cross-shaped blossoms for all to see. The petals shall have bloodstains marked brown, And in the blossom’s center a thorny crown.” Apparently, prior to the 1st Century AD, dogwood trees grew taller and broader than they do today. That all changed when the tree was redesigned by God so they could never be used for anything like that again. I don’t know if I adhere to the legend or not, but I am absolutely positive about the fact that it is impossible to look up into a canopy of dogwood blossoms without sensing heaven and the blessings of new life.
