“Steinhatchee Falls,” Steinhatchee River 2011

The Steinhatchee River begins in Mallory Swamp just south of Town of Mayo and forms the boundary between Dixie and Taylor Counties. It flows some 34 miles through rural north Florida until it reaches the little fishing community of Steinhatchee, where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico. (Pronounced Steen-hatchee) Roughly seven miles upriver from Steinhatchee are the river’s limerock outcroppings that form Steinhatchee Falls. Native Americans used the falls as a crossing point, and before there were bridges, the locals used to drive across them.
