“Starnes Porch,” Cedar Key 2007

Dr. Earl Starnes was appointed by Florida Governor Rubin Askew to head up the state’s first planning effort — the precursor to Florida Department of Community Affairs. He was also the head of the Urban and Regional Planning Department at the University of Florida’s School of Architecture. In the 1990s, when I worked for the Suwannee River Water Management District, Starnes served as a member of the District’s Governing Board. Yes, there’s something of a crush here, but that’s because there’s something about him that reminds me of John Ford — or maybe one of Ford’s movie characters. After all, Starnes is something of a “Renaissance Cracker” — a great thinker, artist, writer, conservationist, architect, and all around rugged individualist. This is the porch he designed and built in Cedar Key where he retired with his wife Miss Dorothy Jean. It describes him better than I can, and if you ever want to know what authentic old-Florida looks like, well, here it is.
