“Sex in the City ~ Cracker Style,” Grant 2011

Grant is an old fishing and agricultural community on the Indian River in southern Brevard County. Besides contributing to the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, the Indian River Lagoon is America’s most diverse estuary. The overlapping of temperate and subtropical zones in the region — along with the convergence of the river’s fresh and brackish water systems with the Atlantic Ocean — provides some 400 species of fish, 260 species of mollusks, and 479 species of shrimp and crabs. I’ve spent several hilarious “weekends with the girls” in a dear friend’s family river house on Grant Farm Island. This Indian River island is just across US 1 from the Grant Grocery. There’s a reason US1 is known as “The Old Dixie Highway” here, and the quaint scenery and local businesses are reminiscent of what coastal communities looked like decades ago. Tony’s Fish Market is a favorite necessity on our island weekends, and it’s something of a tradition to sit in the shade of the old grocery store’s porch.
