In the summertime, most of panhandle Florida makes at least one tubing excursion on the Chipola River. The most popular trip leaves from Spring Creek in Marianna and meanders to and fro through the countryside until it eventually flows into the Chipola River, a tributary of the Apalachicola River. Unlike the “famous-for-tubing” Itchetucknee River further east, celebrants can still bring coolers, picnic baskets, and dogs on this Jackson County excursion. While having food and libations along for the trip is wonderful, it does have a cost. In some ways it makes you thankful that the state park no longer allows the possibility for the litter encountered on this panhandle trip. Still, the spring water is refreshing, the scenery is enthralling, and the diversity of happy people of all ages on the river is uplifting — Mexicans, African Americans, rednecks, urban professionals, college students. Everyone is so different, and yet everyone is in the same great mood.
