“Marvin’s Peace,” Miccosukee, 2007

Today, Miccosukee is a small unincorporated community in northeastern Leon County, but before Florida became a territory, it was a major center for the Miccosukee tribe. Later on, before and after the civil war, plantations dotted the surrounding landscape. But the boll weevil came and the railroad left and Miccosukee might have easily been forgotten if the hippies hadn’t arrived. Well, that was what people in Tallahassee called the folks who established the cooperative residential community out there in 1973 and designed it to have a much higher degree of teamwork than other communities. Today the professionals who live in the community have become a voice in the region on behalf of healthy living, environmentally conscious development, wildlife preservation, and social justice. It was a fitting place for my friend and colleague Marvin Raulston to end up. At his funeral in 2007, one of his neighbors hosted the reception in their home. All I can say is that I really, really needed their old porch and the peace it provided me on that heart-breaking day.
