The heart of the Everglades is Lake Okeechobee — the second largest fresh water lake within the continental United States. In Palm Beach County, in the south-easternmost part of Lake Okeechobee, are Kreamer Island and Torry Island. The two islands are separated today by a canal. Kreamer is accessible only by airboat, but in the dry season recreational vehicles can sometimes reach the island. Torry Island is connected to the City of Belle Glade by the state’s last manually operated swing bridge that crosses the Rim Canal inside the Herbert Hoover Dike. Belle Glade — which is short for “Belle of the Glades,” is where Zora Neale Hurston lived while she was writing Their Eyes Were Watching God in the 1930s. (A must-listen to book on tape!)
