“Kelly’s Lucky Buzzards,” Ft. White, 2012

Buzzards like to frequent my Uncle Kelly’s farm near Ft. White. I’m talking about a lot of buzzards—and they collect in the majestic branches of his live oak trees. In the late evening you can hear their gigantic wings flapping in the twilight and it’s oddly soothing. Folks in rural North Florida say that buzzards are good luck—but everyone I ask does not know the reason why that would be. “They’re jus’ lucky is all” is as definitive an answer as I’m probably going to get. Annoyed with my constant curiosity about how flying death knells could possibly be a “good sign,” my uncle finally offered that maybe it’s because there’s enough water, and all the plants and animals in the landscape are healthy and working together as they should. (My uncle knows how to work me.) Anyway, you can find their wonderfully gigantic feathers all over his land, but it’s not always easy to see “Kelly’s Lucky Buzzards” watching overhead from the branches.
