“Decent Landscaping,” St. George Island 2008

While I was working for the Florida Park Service in the late 1980s, I found myself in the ranger station at St. George Island State Park. It was a fall morning, I remember, because the billowy dune grasses were turning purple—a look that always reminds me of Claude Monet. We were implementing computerized cash registers, and I was there helping to clear up a glitch with the park’s machine when a camper came in on his way out of the park. He and his wife had been camping there for a spell, and as he was leaving he mentioned to the ranger that everything was great, but he thought the park could use some “decent landscaping.” Confused, the ranger didn’t know what to say. “You know, some grass, bushes and flowers,” the camper said, somewhat irritated by our perplexed facial expressions. “Landscaping! Plants that would make it all look a little better.” To this day I cannot drive onto that bedazzling protected barrier island in Apalachicola Bay without thinking about that camper and what he failed to see.
