“Cummer Live Oak,” Jacksonville, 2007

My family has a long history with this tree because my great grandfather’s sister was Mrs. Waldo Cummer. At the turn of the last century, Waldo and his brother Arthur led the Cummer Lumber Company in Jacksonville, while their wives, Ninah Cummer and Clara Cook Cummer (my great aunt), masterminded the cultivation of the formal gardens surrounding their homes along the St. Johns River. Today their gardens are part of The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens—and I just love visiting trees people in my family have been celebrating (and decorating around!) for generations. The gardens make me remember the stories my grandmother told me when I was a little girl, about how much she loved-loved her bicycle and all the freedom it offered her. Wandering around the gardens I can just see her peddling under the garden trees and all around the charming Riverside Community.
