Atsena Otie was the original Cedar Key before the 1896 hurricane and its ten foot storm surge forced the island community further inland to a nearby island. In 1997 the Suwannee River Water Management District bought the island to protect it from development, and it is now managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a part of the Cedar Key National Wildlife Refuge. The public acquisition of the island is special to me for a number of reasons, but mostly because my colleague at the water management district and dear friend Marvin Raulston wrote the grant proposal to the state on behalf of the water management district. The island makes me proud—of him, the state of Florida, and all of us who care about the Real Florida.
