The Wacissa River begins in south-central Jefferson County near the community of Wacissa—a quaint turn in the road where only several hundred people live. There, a crystal clear group of limestone springs provide the water for the Wacissa’s 12-mile journey to where it meets the Aucilla River. After the two rivers meet, the Aucilla carries the Wacissa’s spring water to Apalachee Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. The ethereal Wacissa has been designated by the state as and Outstanding Florida Waterway worthy of protecting, and it is currently managed by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission as part of the Aucilla Wildlife Management Area. But these boys don’t care anything about all that. All they care about is that it is hot, and that the spring water is cool, and that the rope swing is high.
