When we got to this spring that feeds the Wacissa River in southern Jefferson County we were showing our age. We’d just come from a long horseback ride and were half-way through a day-long 50th birthday party for one of my closest friends. Just the thought of one of my friends being 50 was exhausting, let alone all the festivities that came along with it. These boys were already playing on the swing, and we watched them while we picnicked in the shade trees around the swimming hole. Once upon a time, this was why everyone in the birthday group enjoyed visiting springs. But on this day we did not indulge on the rope swing. Instead we soaked our feet in the water and drank Bloody Marys and beer—and were happy the boys we did not know were having so much unadulterated fun.
