If Highway 98 weren’t right there hugging the curvy coast, Franklin County’s pine trees would all be nestled along the coastline of St. George Sound between Carrabelle and Eastpoint. In some places, they still are. Despite the low lying elevations, I call this stretch of highway “Florida’s Big Sur.” No matter what season you see it in, the water, pines, and sand combine for stunning vistas and a soothing view of old Florida. Coming back from St. George Island we stopped along this stretch of beach to look for driftwood. It was late October, and the autumn wildflowers with the storm coming in provided an otherworldly light.
