Atsena Otie – When the Dawn is Hushed

Atsena Otie – When the Dawn is Hushed

This is the dock at the island of Atsena Otie. After we’d spent the day exploring other islands off Cedar Key including the University of Florida’s marine lab at Seahorse Island, we finished at Atsena Otie to visit with the souls from the early 1800s resting in the island’s picturesque cemetery. The old iron work in the graveyard is so splendid you can’t help put pray some south Florida interior designer doesn’t steal it. Its crooked juxtapositions and time-honored inter-mingling with the gnarly live oaks and Spanish moss magically frame and drape the graveyard’s spectacular marsh vistas.  It was, as always, enchanting. Back at the dock, my family was equally enchanting. Long before I could see them, I could hear their muffled conversations out on the boat peppered with laughter. As I emerged from the island’s old footpath out onto the beach, all I could see was family members — young and old — doing what you’re supposed to do while celebrating Christmas. I just stood there looking at how beautiful they were, thankful that “Peace was with me and mine.”
