I’ve known these trees at the Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park in Tallahassee all my life, and I can vouch for them. They are souls. I can feel it. Like seemingly all of the live oaks in the gardens, they are at once stunning and overwhelmingly “gi-normous.” I like to touch their mighty trunks and wonder who else has marveled under their canopies — Apalachee Indians, Spaniards, Seminoles, and generations of old southern families. They’re just too beautiful to describe and somehow remarkably friendly. But then, they know us. The majestic live oak tree in front of the Maclay house has a low branch that just about every family in Tallahassee has “hugged” while getting their picture taken on it. They are the charming old friends the community has in common, and we all seem to enjoy seeing them at weddings, memorial services, and events in the gardens. When you visit the gardens, introduce yourself to them. Oh, and tell them I sent you and that I’m still sending them my love.
