During the 1970s my mom always joked about writing to the Hee Haw television show to get them to do their hometown salute segment for Yeehaw Junction—home of the notorious Desert Inn. She should have, because it would have been hilarious to hear Buck Owens or Roy Clark say, “Hee Haw salutes Yee Haw Junction, population 100.” Nobody would believe Florida had a place like Yee Haw. For over a century, the Junction was little more than a “stop on the trail,” and back in the day the Inn made the town hop with cowboys, hunters, and truckers. In modern times it serves as a quick stop off the Turnpike near Orlando. And with Developments planned for all around it in Osceola County, its quirky flavor is not long for this world. But you will be glad to know, even in 2012, the Historic Landmark advertises that it “always passes all its health inspections.” Uh hum. And, the Inn’s hours are “8:30ish daily…maybe 9 on Sunday.” Stop in and order a drink there while it’s still real. It’ll be a good story. I promise.
