At first I thought the kid was surly. Maybe it’s because we’d invaded his private swimming hole, or maybe he and his buddies were stoned. We stumbled upon them on our spring-hopping cruise down the Oklawaha River. While we were swimming in the spring, or merely smelling the warm spring breeze and gentle sunshine, he was simply floating around us. He didn’t seem interested in going anywhere, just floating over the spring head. From the bank, I watched him long enough to understand that both the boy in the canoe and the idyllic scenery were very Winslow Homer.
