“The Greatest Generation,” Ft Myers, 2012

You hafta wonder when he was floating in the Pacific after his aircraft carrier was hit in the Battle of Iwo Jima, what Captain George Weber thought about his future. Those were the tumultuous years after “the day that will live in infamy.” Could he have imagined a long and loving marriage, cultivating exquisite orchids, listening to Fox News in his Man Cave, playing golf year round in his backyard, or walking his dog from a golf cart? With my grandfather the naval commander gone, George now serves as the only representative of the Greatest Generation I know. But like my grandfather, I believe it was George’s life far beyond WWII that let him know what America was really about. He left the military and eventually retired as the sheriff for St. Paul, Minnesota. He worked hard and served his country and his family honorably. Florida should be where people like that end up.
