“Tacky is as tacky does,” Wildwood 2012

In search of Pecan Pralines for a sweet Florida Boy serving in Afghanistan, I have been stopping at the tackiest tourist traps on Florida’s highways. Lord only knows why he and his buddies like them — but I stop and look for these southern sweets when driving cross state. You know the places I’m talking about. Places that would sell Pecan Pralines. And sure, there are hokey tourist traps like these on interstates throughout the south that use the formulaic billboards and fluorescent typefaces to signal that “tacky cheap” is available at the next exit. But you have to admit Florida’s interpretation of the genre goes all out. It’s a hybrid that takes redneck showmanship and the shyster pageantry of swamp acreage salesmen to a whole new level. In that respect it is pretty funny. Who knows, before the war is over I may end up a real connoisseur of these cheesy eyesores.
