“God is Love,” Ft. Myers 2012

This sign in the front yard of a 1920s home on the corner of McGregor Boulevard and Grove Avenue has been a part of the downtown Ft. Myers commute for over 70 years. With God’s grace and a loving community, the sign was restored and repaired by a private group that now also pays for the electricity needed to keep its neon green lights glowing through the night. I just adore the whole idea of it—not to mention the 1940s neon look of the sign itself. The bumper sticker on the sign used to bother me until I found out that several owners of the house endured people shooting at the sign, throwing beer bottles at it, launching paint balls on it and other unconscionable acts. After learning that, the bumper sticker that had been there for years seemed somewhat benign. I imagine it was removed with the restoration, and that I will probably miss being tickled by the idea that “checking twice” is a Godly act—not to mention contemplating the idea of God as a biker. There are two paintings featuring this sign. The other one is entitled: Keeping the Faith.
