“Beyond the Yellow Brick Road,” Alachua Spring 2012

I spent my entire childhood adolescence with horses and left them for college. It was a mistake. I can’t say that Elton John didn’t warn me, but I was ready to move on to the outside world beyond the farm. Back then I was really excited about traveling the Yellow Brick Road and all the potential being a grown up seemed to have in store for me. But alas, several decades later I find I still haven’t grown up, and the Yellow Brick Road is wearing me thin. When career moves are being discussed with friends over drinks, I find myself shrugging, “I just want a pony.” Although I’m still not comfortable admitting, “I should have stayed on the farm, I should have listened to my old man,” I am slowly accepting the fact that I want to return to something of what I left behind. I’ve been thinking about it a lot and remembering how my childhood friend’s mom used to tell us, “When you pray, be specific.” So, OK. This painting is something of a prayer for my dream backyard.
