We’ve spent a couple of Christmases vacationing in the Town of Suwannee, where the historic Suwannee River empties into the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a crusty little town nestled in the heart of the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge and offers boating adventures in both the river and the gulf—not to mention all the glorious salt and fresh water creeks. The 54,000 acre Wildlife Refuge sustains one of the largest undeveloped river delta-estuarine systems in the country and is also great for winter hiking. Vistas like this from ancient middens take your breath away and remind you why the sleepy region is called “Florida’s Nature Coast.”
